Toronto, Canada
My Home Town added by SANDY
Toronto is great for wheel-chair people!
Toronto is an easy city to navigate on foot or by public transit. The bulk
of hotels, even those outside the downtown areas, are located near streetcar
stops, bus stops or subway stations, which can take you to most of the sites
and shopping districts you may want to see.
Toronto is a very diverse place where you can experience the world in the
palm of your hand. There are many tourist spots to visit in Toronto, but
its' real charm lies in exploring its streets and absorbing all the culture
that this city can offer you. What culture, you may ask? To some people
Toronto may lack identity due to the numerous people of all colors and races
that have made it home - but, it's precisely that mix of different cultures
that makes Toronto the electrifying city that it is.
If you're planning to visit many of the major sites, it may make sense to buy a CityPass. It offers admission to the Royal Ontario Museum, CN Tower, Casa Loma, Hockey Hall of Fame, Ontario Science Centre, and Toronto Zoo. All are described below. (Canadians looking to purchase the CityPass online can get it through Expedia.ca. You can also buy it at any participating attraction.)
The CN Tower is obviously Toronto's most visible landmark.
As the tallest free-standing structure in the world, it could hardly be
otherwise. Ironically, the CN Tower wasn't built to be an icon. Its primary
purpose was utilitarian, in good old Canadian fashion. It was designed as a
bigger, better broadcast tower for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.
The CBC backed out, but Canadian National Railways, which owned the land,
decided to press ahead. When it was finished in April 1975, it was already
legendary. It did go on to become a broadcasting tower, but tourism
accounts for about 80% of revenue.
